Kickboxing Classes for Teens & Adults: Ages 14+

Art of Kickboxing specializes in beginner kickboxing classes in Richmond, BC, serving Metro Vancouver for teens (ages 14+) and adults. Our kickboxing classes prioritize learning proper kickboxing technique and developing real-world self-defence skills. We focus on ensuring the mastery of kickboxing fundamentals like stance, footwork, strikes (punches and kicks), and defensive strategies.

Designed for beginners interested in getting serious about developing self-defence skills or learning martial arts, our kickboxing classes emphasize technical learning and practical application. You’ll drill effective combinations, practice precision and timing against pads or partners, and sharpen body mechanics for power and efficiency. While fitness and cardiovascular benefits are a natural byproduct of intensive physical activity our class focus is on technical mastery and martial arts conditioning—rather than cardio-based workouts here. We welcome all fitness and experience levels to join us!

Kickboxing Class Structure

Kickboxing Training: What to Expect

Above: Kickboxing stands out as being the best martial art at balancing both mid-range offence and defence. Here, Head Coach Kris teaches how to utilize effective combinations of boxing hand strikes with powerful kicks against an aggressor coming towards you, maintaining proper distance to land the strikes.

For beginners in kickboxing or those refining their skills, our classes focus on mastering proper kickboxing technique while developing self-defence skills and combat proficiency.

Our structured class sessions blend the martial arts education required to understand techniques from the body mechanics, and the drills required to for lifelong self-defence muscle memory, whether you’re new to martial arts or advancing your kickboxing combos.

Here’s how we structure our kickboxing classes:

  1. Warm-Up (5–10 Minutes)

    • Footwork Drills: Footwork is the heart of martial arts and combat sports. Warm up through mobility exercises including lateral shuffles and pivot exercises.

    • Calisthenics: Warm up your entire body with jumping jacks, squats, and MMA drills to prep for kicks and strikes.

    • Shadow Boxing: Learn proper shadow boxing to build muscle memory for fluid combinations, blending punches and kicks in seamless motion.

  2. Technique & Pad Work (Majority of Class)

    • Kickboxing Fundamentals: Master stance, movement, and mechanics for punches (jabs, crosses, hooks) and kicks (front kicks, roundhouses, teeps). Learn defense like blocks, parries, and evasive footwork.

    • Partnered Pad Work: Execute and refine combos with a partner or guided by experienced kickboxing coaches. Focus on timing, power, and accuracy—no prior skill level required!

    • Skill Technique Progression: Advance from basic strikes to complex kickboxing combos (e.g., punch-kick chains) and defensive work for real-world self-defence application.

  3. Conditioning or Optional Sparring (10 Minutes)

    • High-Intensity Drills: Boost stamina with bag work, partner drills, or circuits that blend cardio and combat conditioning.

    • Optional Sparring: Safe, supervised, skill-based sessions—light technical simulated sparring for beginners, more competitive rounds for seasoned students.

  4. Cool-Down & Stretching (5-10 Minutes)

    • Full-Body Recovery: Static stretches to boost flexibility and reduce soreness.

5. What happens if I miss a class?

We have no issues with students missing classes, and they can continue with the next class or attend classes when they feel like it. We understand that everyone’s schedules outside of classes may be different, and therefore, there are times when students may be unable to attend class or don’t want to attend class for whatever reason. There’s no need to feel guilty for missing a class, however there may be some key lessons missed, but we’ll try our best to catch the students up.

6. Is Sparring Mandatory?

Light sparring is strictly optional. We have classes where light sparring is available, with professional supervision by our coaches. Only those who we feel are safe enough to spar will be allowed to spar. We highly prioritize safety, and everyone who participates in sparring should understand the risks involved.  For those who want to compete in the future, light sparring can give an idea of what a tournament round could be like.

7. I have Health or Developmental Conditions, can I still Join?

Although our classes are very safe, as they are designed for beginners, those who have health or developmental conditions should consult a medical doctor before starting classes at Art of Kickboxing, with respect for your safety. If the medical doctor believes that it is safe for you to participate in martial arts classes, we welcome you to join us and will do our best to accommodate you!

8. what is Kickboxing Good For?

Kickboxing is often the chosen striking martial art for many professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)  fighters. Kickboxing provides a complete core set of striking techniques, including punches, kicks, footwork for range control, and defence techniques that can help you in a self-defence scenario. It’s perfect for those who work in high-crime environments, security guards, law enforcement, military, or anyone who wants the ability to defend themselves and others should the need arise in a violent self-defence scenario.

9. Is Kickboxing Good for Weight Loss?

Kickboxing is extremely fitness-intensive. Many fitness enthusiasts struggle with the intensity of kickboxing training for the first time due to how different it is as a physical activity. Kickboxing can definitely provide the caloric burn you may need to boost your weight loss plan. However, like with every weight loss plan, it’s all about calories in and out. If you’re consistently consuming more calories than you burn, you will most likely struggle to lose weight.

Art of Kickboxing teaches authentic martial arts techniques, meaning proper kickboxing techniques and self-defence training. While many kickboxing studios in Metro Vancouver focus on cardiovascular health, often called cardio kickboxing. Additionally, our focus on small class sizes of 2-12 means we can focus more on helping each one of our students individually, rather than in large kickboxing gyms which can have up to 20-30 students in a single class, but the coaches are unable to go through each student for personalized attention.
