Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Kickboxing?
Kickboxing is a striking-based martial art that combines elements of Karate, Muay Thai, and Western Boxing. The term “kickboxing” was first introduced in the 1960s by Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi. Kickboxing is perfect for those who want to learn boxing, but also want to know much more than just boxing, such as how to utilize kicks or tie-in punches with kicks. Kickboxing is often the core striking martial art of MMA professionals that you might have seen in the UFC.
Do I need prior experience to join a class?
No experience is required. Art of Kickboxing’s classes are all specifically designed for beginners who want to learn kickboxing, boxing, Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. Those with experience are more than welcome to join.
What do I bring to Art of Kickboxing?
For classes or personal training sessions, bring athletic clothes (shorts or sweatpants). Shoes will be removed outside the door and inside at the top of the staircase, as we only allow bare feet or socks on the training mats. Kids are required to wear their Art of Kickboxing shirts during classes. This helps to instill a strong sense of community, connection, and discipline. Bring a water bottle or drinks to stay hydrated. We currently do not have a water fountain at the studio. We also have racks for those with bags or backpacks for training. Please use unscented or lightly scented deodorant, anti-perspirant, or shower before training, out of respect for fellow students and instructors.
Are the Classes Focused on Cardio or Self-Defence?
While fitness-focused cardio kickboxing classes are very popular in Metro Vancouver, our classes are not cardio or fitness-focused. Art of Kickboxing’s classes are all focused on learning martial arts (combat arts) with proper technique and training. They are perfect for those who are simply interested in learning martial arts, want to develop practical self-defence skills, and those thinking about competing one day, but don’t know where to start.
Holiday Breaks & Missed Classes
Do You Close for Holidays?
Yes. We typically close for one week during the Christmas holiday season, and occasionally on long weekends or statutory holidays. These breaks are pre-planned and communicated in advance, allowing students and families to prepare accordingly.
Do I still pay my Monthly Membership during holidays or missed classes?
Yes. Our Membership fees are billed monthly and are based on program access, not a per-class or per-week rate. Short breaks are factored into the pricing and do not result in paused payments or credits. This enables us to maintain a stable and consistent program year-round for all members. Your monthly membership includes:
- Reserved spot in class
- Access to belt tracking and structured curriculum
- Instructor coaching and mentorship
- Progression support (even if you miss a week here and there)
Personal Concerns
I have Social Anxiety, but I’m Interested in Martial Arts Training. Is it An Issue?
If you or your child is interested in learning and training in martial arts, we warmly welcome both you and your children at Art of Kickboxing, regardless of whether you or your children have social anxiety or a lack of confidence. We highly encourage individuals with social anxiety to join our classes, as martial arts training can often help people feel more capable, reduce social anxiety, and improve self-esteem and confidence. Art of Kickboxing was specifically developed for beginners and those who feel intimidated to enter other martial arts gyms or classes in Metro Vancouver due to anxiety. We have a policy that requires students and instructors to be respectful, and those who are consistently found to be bullying others will be subject to losing their membership.
