Your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class might seem intimidating, but there’s no need to be nervous! At Art of Kickboxing in Richmond, BC, we understand how it feels to be brand new to martial arts. That’s why we’ve built our classes specifically for newcomers. Our team is here to make sure that your introductory session to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is safe, supportive, and comfortable for you to learn the martial art effectively.
- Question: What Should You Expect at Your First BJJ Class at Art of Kickboxing?
- Answer: At your first beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Art of Kickboxing in Metro Vancouver’s Richmond, BC, you’ll be welcomed into a friendly, beginner-oriented environment where Coach Joe—a black belt, Pan-American, and World Champion—will guide you through the basics, step-by-step, including how to breakfall and how to move on the ground. You’ll train alongside other newcomers to the martial art and gradually build towards learning techniques like guard passes, closed guard control, and positional sparring over multiple classes.
What Does a Beginner BJJ Class Look Like?
At Art of Kickboxing, our beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are structured for those with no prior experience. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried martial arts before—most of your fellow students will be new to the martial art as well! You don’t need a high fitness level or advanced coordination, only a respectful attitude and a willingness to learn.
Each class session begins with BJJ warm-ups to activate your body for training. Then, Coach Joe—our black belt, Pan-American Champion, and World Champion—guides students step-by-step through basic movements and technique practice. You’ll learn technical stand-ups, how to breakfall safely, and how to move effectively from the ground. These are the essential building blocks of your BJJ journey.
From there, over multiple classes, we’ll ease you into basic techniques like:
- Maintaining closed guard
- Establishing commanding positions
- Executing your first guard pass maneuvers
What to Bring to Your First BJJ Class
A common question we get is: “What should I wear to my first BJJ class?” While most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes require a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi right away, we make it easier. For your first class, you can wear alternative gear like long-sleeved shirts, t-shirts, and sweatpants or cargo pants. Ideally, avoid revealing clothes such as tank tops or shorts—due to the close-contact nature of BJJ, more coverage ensures comfort for both you and your training partners.
You won’t need rash guards, protective gear, or a full bit of gear just yet—just bring water and come ready to learn. Don’t forget to brush your teeth or use mouth wash, and utilize deodorant or shower beforehand to maintain hygiene and minimize the spread of bacteria.
