What to Bring
Gear up for success with these essentials:
- Dress Code: Wearing an Art of Kickboxing branded shirt is mandatory in our kids classes. The purpose of the dress code is to improve focus in class and the feeling of being part of a community. The benefits of a dress code extend to future careers where some workplaces have a dress code or require employees to wear uniforms for professional reasons. Kids can wear any breathable, flexible, comfortable pants, sweatpants, or shorts during class. If parents need additional shirts due to laundry reasons, additional shirts are available for purchase.
- Footwear: Students can train barefoot, with socks, or with clean boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling shoes. Any casual shoes not specific to boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling, can be brought to the studio but they must be removed before stepping on the training mats.
- Gear: We provide gloves and shinguards to borrow for the class (but students are welcome to bring their own.)
- Water Bottle: We highly recommend students bring drinkable water with them to class. A water fountain is not currently available at the studio.
Kickboxing Belt System
Kids are awarded with ranked belts through our kickboxing belt system, unique to Art of Kickboxing, which celebrates their discipline in class, their effort, and also their technique proficiency.
Class Structure
Training Details: What to Expect
Our kids classes focus on teaching proper boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai techniques from the beginning, including proper stances, footwork, punches, kicks, and defence through engaging drills.
Through these classes children develop lifelong confidence and discipline while learning self-defence and having fun, leaving every class feel more capable to handle any challenges that come their way.
Kids learn self-defence through martial arts, starting with boxing, then kickboxing, and eventually Muay Thai.
Each class session encourages focus, respect, teamwork, and perseverance, building lifelong habits of resilience, focus, and a positive “I can do it!” mindset.
Here’s how we structure our sessions:
Our classes are age-appropriate, split into two age groups:
Juniors (Ages 6-9) and Youth (Ages 10-13).
For kids age 6-9, the classes may include more fun and games to keep children engaged and comfortable.
For kids age 10-13, there’s more emphasis on maintaining proper technique, technique drills, and conditioning, rather than games.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I enroll my child at Art of Kickboxing?
You can text or call 604-805-3382, message us on WhatsApp, or visit us in person at 4471 No. 6 Road, Unit #125a, Richmond, BC to enroll your children. We provide one free trial class for your children—no commitment required. Just show up ready to learn!
2. Do kids need prior martial arts experience to join?
Not at all! Art of Kickboxing’s classes are designed for complete beginners, so no previous experience in boxing, kickboxing, or Muay Thai is needed. Our coaches have extensive experience in training complete beginners and are very patient and passionate when teaching.
3. Are girls welcome in the program?
Absolutely! Our kids classes are very popular with young girls. Our classes are inclusive and co-ed, and we proactively make sure every child feels respected, safe, and welcomed at our studio. We highly encourage young girls and women to join our classes at Art of Kickboxing. The benefits of our kickboxing classes extend beyond childhood, developing the next generation of women to grow into strong, assertive individuals, capable of defending themselves and others.
4. Can parents watch or stay during class?
Yes! Parents are free to stay and observe the class quietly; however, seating and space is limited due to the studio’s size. This helps your child feel supported while allowing coaches to maintain focus and flow in the session.
5. What if my child is “shy” or anxious about joining?
We completely understand! Our free trial class helps kids ease into the class and see if they like it. For both kids and adults, doing something new and being in a new environment can feel uncomfortable. Our coaches use a warm, non-intimidating approach, and many kids end up loving being in class. Many students of martial arts come from backgrounds where they were anxious or have been victims of bullying in school, and are typically more considerate of the importance of making people feel welcome. We proactively maintain a respectful and bully-free environment, and if a child has an issue with bullying behaviour in class, we take it seriously.
6. Is 1-on-1 personal training available for Kids?
Yes! Private 1-on-1 martial arts training is available for kids. Personal training sessions are perfect for students who need more support with accessibility, or want personalized instruction, accelerated progress, or specific help with techniques. Contact us directly to book a personal training session.
7. How do you handle kids with short attention spans or behavioral challenges?
Kids with short attention spans, behavioral challenges, and developmental conditions are more than welcome to join us. Our coaches are experienced with kids with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD at our studio. Where it can become an issue is if the child is consistently being disrespectful or bullying other children, or if the child’s behaviour negatively affects the learning and training of other students. In this situation, it is unfair for the other students in the class and we must respect their membership fees and time and discuss alternative options for your child such as 1-on-1 personal training sessions.
8. Is Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai Safe for Kids?
Our kids’ classes feature a strict no-sparring policy, which means your child will not receive any direct physical contact during the class, and the risk of any injury is very low. Other martial arts studios or gyms may have sparring in their classes, which we believe is unsafe for children.
9. What Happens if My Child Misses a Class?
We have no issues with students missing classes, and they can continue with the next class or attend classes when they feel like it. We understand that everyone’s schedules outside of classes may be different, and therefore, there are times when students may be unable to attend class or don’t want to attend class for whatever reason. There’s no need to feel guilty for missing a class, however there may be some key lessons missed, but we’ll try our best to catch the students up.
10. What makes Art of Kickboxing’s Kids Classes stand out in Metro Vancouver?
Our kids’ martial arts classes stand out in Metro Vancouver by providing a 3-in-1: boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai lessons in a single program, along with smaller class sizes for effective learning. With small class sizes (4–10 students), each child receives individualized attention from passionate, experienced coaches who focus on building real-world self-defence skills, confidence, and discipline.
