What to Expect

You’ll learn key Muay Thai techniques such as kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work, while also improving your footwork and defensive skills. Whether you’re looking to master Muay Thai combinations, develop effective self-defence skills, or get an intense cardiovascular workout, our Muay Thai classes provide a well-rounded approach to both technique and fitness.

Here’s how we structure our sessions:

  1. Warm-Up (5–10 Minutes)

    • Dynamic Stretching: Flexibility is highly important in Muay Thai. Dynamic stretches for flexibility (e.g. leg swings, hip openers).
    • Footwork Drills: Footwork is the heart of martial arts and combat sports. Master balance and agility with lateral shuffles and pivots.
    • Calisthenics: Jumping jacks, pushups, and MMA-style conditioning to fire up your entire body.
    • Shadow Boxing: The purpose of shadow boxing is to build muscle memory of fluid combinations, sharpening precision and rhythm through solo practice.

  2. Technique & Pad Work (Majority of Class)

    • Muay Thai Fundamentals: Learn the basics of the Muay Thai stance, Muay Thai movement, and striking mechanics. Break down Muay Thai-specific punches (jabs, crosses, hooks), kicks, elbow strikes, and knee strikes, along with Muay Thai-specific defence.

    • Partnered Pad Work: Apply combinations with feedback from experienced trainers—no prior skill level required!

    • Skill Technique Progression: From basic strikes to advanced combos, our Muay Thai program adapts into more advanced techniques overtime which can be used with MMA techniques simultaneously.

    • Occasional Calisthenics: Conditioning between rounds may be added in-between rounds.
  3. Conditioning or Sparring (10 Minutes)

    • High-Intensity Drills: Bag work, partner drills, or circuits for metabolic conditioning and cardiovascular workout.

    • Optional Sparring: Safe, supervised, skill-based sessions—light technical simulated sparring for beginners, more competitive rounds for seasoned students.

  4. Cool-Down & Stretching

    • Full-Body Recovery: Proper static stretches to boost flexibility and reduce soreness.

FAQs

Muay Thai Frequently Asked Questions

Muay Thai is an accessible martial art for beginners, and at Art of Kickboxing, we make sure to create a positive environment that caters to all fitness levels. We pace the lessons to ensure each student can gradually build their muscular endurance and technique.

Kickboxing is about mastering range and footwork, while Muay Thai involves up-close powerful elbow strikes, kicks, and punches, all of which our beginner students will learn. The first few classes may feel challenging, but with the guidance of our experienced coaches, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you adapt, especially as your physical fitness and cardiovascular health improve with the Muay Thai training.

For beginners, we recommend starting with at least one class per week, especially if your fitness goals include learning practical self-defence skills while improving your cardiovascular endurance. Some students prefer to jump in with 2 classes a week, while others focus on 4-6 classes per month to fit their schedule.

If you’re looking to improve quickly, attending multiple sessions weekly plus one-on-one personal training will help you gain confidence in your Muay Thai combat abilities. Attending our MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) training classes for beginners will also help you learn ground submissions, takedowns, and how to defending against them.

Mastering Muay Thai varies depending on your skill level, commitment, and fitness goals. Many beginner students with no prior martial arts experience start feeling comfortable with the basics after 8-12 classes, while others may take a few months. To get a solid understanding of Muay Thai’s dynamic fighting techniques and self-defence skills, consistent training is key.

Over time, you’ll improve your core strength, mental health, and physical conditioning, which takes a while in martial arts or combat sports as a beginner. Advanced techniques, like combination elbow strikes and knee strikes, are typically introduced as you progress into more advanced classes, typically after about 5-6 classes, skills progress and memorization is different for everyone.

Yes, Muay Thai is incredibly effective in self-defence situations. Its focus on striking techniques—such as punches, kicks, and elbow strikes—makes it practical for real-world scenarios. Muay Thai teaches you how to use your entire body efficiently, making it one of the most well-rounded martial arts for self-defence.

Our classes at Art of Kickboxing emphasize practical self-defence skills training, so you’re prepared for unpredictable situations with confidence.
