Muay Thai Class Structure
Muay Thai Training: What to Expect
Above: Both Muay Thai matches and self-defence scenarios are dynamic, not stationary. At Art of Kickboxing, we’ll teach you how to defend yourself against a moving aggressor through fluid Muay Thai kickboxing combinations taught by our expert-level coaches.
For beginners or those looking to refine their Muay Thai techniques, our Muay Thai classes emphasize the fundamentals of Thailand’s ancient and combative Martial Art of Eight Limbs.
Muay Thai is a Thai martial art that uses a unique fighting stance, punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, differing from boxing, which uses only fists, and kickboxing, which typically excludes elbows and clinch work.
You’ll learn key Muay Thai techniques such as kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work, while also improving your footwork and defensive skills.
Here’s How We Structure Our Muay Thai Classes:
Warm-Up (5–10 Minutes)
- Dynamic Stretching: Flexibility is highly important in Muay Thai. Dynamic stretches for flexibility (e.g. leg swings, hip openers).

- Calisthenics: Jumping jacks, pushups, and MMA-style conditioning to fire up your entire body.
Shadow Boxing: The purpose of shadow boxing is to build muscle memory of fluid combinations, sharpening precision and rhythm through solo practice.

Muay Thai Fundamentals: Learn the basics of the Muay Thai stance, Muay Thai movement, and striking mechanics. Break down Muay Thai-specific punches (jabs, crosses, hooks), kicks, elbow strikes, knee strikes, leg sweeps, along with Muay Thai-specific defence.
Partnered Pad Work: Apply combinations with feedback from experienced trainers—no prior skill level required!
Skill Technique Progression: From basic strikes to advanced combos, our Muay Thai program adapts into more advanced techniques over time, which can be used with MMA techniques simultaneously.

5. What happens if I miss a class?
We have no issues with students missing classes, and they can continue with the next class or attend classes when they feel like it. We understand that everyone’s schedules outside of classes may be different, and therefore, there are times when students may be unable to attend class or don’t want to attend class for whatever reason. There’s no need to feel guilty for missing a class, however there may be some key lessons missed, but we’ll try our best to catch the students up.
6. Is There Sparring in the Class?
No. There is no sparring in our Muay Thai classes. Students who want to try light sparring can talk to one of our coaches to see if they’re ready to spar. Light sparring would be done in our co-ed kickboxing classes; however, only those who we feel are safe enough to spar will be allowed to spar. We highly prioritize safety, and everyone who participates in sparring should understand the risks involved.
7. I have Health or Developmental Conditions, can I still Join?
Although our classes are very safe, as they are designed for beginners, those who have health or developmental conditions should consult a medical doctor before starting classes at Art of Kickboxing, with respect for your safety. 8. Is Muay Thai Hard for Beginners?
Muay Thai is an accessible martial art for beginners, and at Art of Kickboxing, we make sure to create a positive, patient environment where we’ll break down every part of Muay Thai training step-by-step. We pace the lessons to ensure each student can gradually learn each Muay Thai technique with long-term retention through muscle memory. Kickboxing is about mastering range and footwork, while Muay Thai involves up-close powerful elbow strikes, kicks, and punches, all of which our beginner students will learn. The first few classes may feel challenging, but with the guidance of our experienced coaches, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you adapt, especially as your physical fitness and cardiovascular health improve with the Muay Thai training.
9. Is Muay Thai Useful for Self-Defence?
Yes! Muay Thai is incredibly effective in self-defence situations. Its focus on up-close striking techniques such as elbows and knees makes it practical for many real-world self-defence scenarios. Muay Thai teaches you how to use your entire body efficiently, making it one of the most well-rounded martial arts for self-defence. Our classes at Art of Kickboxing emphasize practical self-defence skills training, so you’re prepared for unpredictable situations with confidence.
10. What makes Art of Kickboxing’s Muay Thai classes stand out in Metro Vancouver?
Instead of intensively preparing you for competition like many Muay Thai gyms, in our classes, we focus on proper learning from the beginning for long-term memory retention. We provide the education and step-by-step technique practice to help you remember every part of Muay Thai. Additionally, our focus on small class sizes of 2-12 means we can focus more on helping each one of our students individually, rather than in large Muay Thai gyms, which can have up to 20 students in a single class, but the coaches are unable to go through each student for personalized attention.
