Boxing Class Structure
Boxing Training: What to Expect
Above: Head Coach Kris and BJJ Black Belt Coach Joe demoing one of the most effective boxing techniques called a “liver shot.” While effective against an opponent, it’s also one of the hardest to land correctly. However, with expert coaching at Art of Kickboxing, students can learn how to properly set up the liver shot during a boxing match.
For beginners in boxing or those refining their boxing skills, our boxing classes are focused on learning the boxing stance, boxing footwork including bobbing and weaving, rolling and slipping, utilizing weaving and angles for unique boxing combinations, emphasizing parries and tight defence, and improving timing, coordination, and technique for your punches to help those get better in boxing.

2. Do I need prior boxing experience to join?
Not at all! Art of Kickboxing’s classes are designed for complete beginners, so no previous experience in boxing is required. Our coaches have extensive experience in training complete beginners and are very patient and passionate when teaching.
3. Are women welcome to Join?
Absolutely! We highly welcome and encourage both teen girls (14+) and women to join any of our classes and train at Art of Kickboxing. Additionally, we have a female coach who teaches our women-only kickboxing class, exclusively for teen girls (14+) and women who want to train with other female students, however, teen girls (14+) and women are more than welcome to be a part of our teens and adults classes.
4. Is 1-on-1 Personal Training Available?
Yes! For those who prefer to learn or train alone, we provide private 1-on-1 personal training sessions for Kickboxing, Boxing, Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Our personal training availability is typically in the morning, due to our classes being held in the afternoon. Here are our pricing plans.
5. What happens if I miss a class?
We have no issues with students missing classes, and they can continue with the next class or attend classes when they feel like it. We understand that everyone’s schedules outside of classes may be different, and therefore, there are times when students may be unable to attend class or don’t want to attend class for whatever reason. There’s no need to feel guilty for missing a class, however there may be some key lessons missed, but we’ll try our best to catch the students up.
6. Is There Sparring in the Class?
No. There is no sparring in our boxing classes for safety reasons. Students who want to try light sparring can talk to one of our coaches to see if they’re ready to spar. Light sparring would be done in our co-ed kickboxing classes; however, only those who we feel are safe enough to spar will be allowed to spar. We highly prioritize safety, and everyone who participates in sparring should understand the risks involved.
7. I have Health or Developmental Conditions, can I still Join?
Although our classes are very safe, as they are designed for beginners, those who have health or developmental conditions should consult a medical doctor before starting classes at Art of Kickboxing, with respect for your safety. If the medical doctor believes that it is safe for you to participate in martial arts classes, we welcome you to join us and will do our best to accommodate you!
8. whY Train In Boxing, if You Train in Kickboxing?
Boxing and kickboxing differ significantly in stance, strategy, and range. Boxing is a completely different martial art that is utilized in kickboxing. Training in boxing sharpens your punching to an elite level and teaches advanced movement and defensive skills that kickboxing often doesn’t emphasize, such as weaving and rolling. It builds confidence in close-range hand-to-hand combat and strengthens your overall striking foundation—making your kickboxing more effective. That’s why many top-level kickboxers, Muay Thai fighters, and MMA athletes cross-train in boxing to refine their hands, footwork, and timing.
9. Is boxing a Good Cardio Workout?
Like with kickboxing, boxing training is an extremely good workout for your cardiovascular system. Boxing is a lot more tiring to actually do in real life than it looks on TV or YouTube. Drilling out proper boxing combinations for an hour with a professional coach or a good partner can be significantly more calorie burning than jogging for an hour. However, regarding weight loss, with every weight loss plan, it’s all about calories in and out. If you’re consistently consuming more calories than you burn, you will most likely struggle to lose weight.
10. What makes Art of Kickboxing’s boxing Classes stand out in Metro Vancouver?
Art of Kickboxing teaches authentic martial arts techniques, meaning proper boxing techniques and self-defence training. Many other boxing studios in Metro Vancouver focus their boxing classes on cardiovascular health and getting a good workout, for comparison. Additionally, our focus on small class sizes of 2-12 means we can focus more on helping each one of our students individually, rather than in large boxing gyms which can have up to 20 students in a single class, but the coaches are unable to go through each student for personalized attention.

Here’s our schedule & pricing plans. Feel free to contact us for more information.
