Class Structure

What to Expect

Our kids’ kickboxing classes are designed for beginners of martial arts, as well as welcomes those who have experience. Our classes focus on building confidence, coordination, and discipline while teaching foundational techniques such as punches, kicks, and footwork through engaging drills.

Kids learn age-appropriate self-defence skills starting from boxing, kickboxing, and then Muay Thai. Self-defence skills enhance awareness, balance, and personal safety, all while developing agility, strength, and endurance through high-energy games and partner activities.

Each session encourages focus, respect, teamwork, and perseverance, building lifelong habits of resilience, focus, and a positive “I can do it!” mindset.

Here’s how we structure our sessions:

(For Rising Champions [Ages 8-14,] there’s more emphasis on learning technique, technique drills, and conditioning, rather than games.)

  1. Group Circle (5-10 Minutes)

    • Class Discussion: Kids sit in a circle and share whatever they want about their day. We pass around a pad, and the child that holds the pad has their turn to talk. The aim of this is develop social connection and community with each other, and to also teach the kids listening skills and patience. Both important for following class instructions.

  2. Warm-Up (5–10 Minutes)

    • Warm-up Drills: Warm up through mobility exercises which can include ladder drills, lateral shuffles, and light calisthenics.

    • Focus on Discipline: Part of the warm-up session is to instill discipline in the kids in a fun way, but focused on the exercise.

  3. Technique & Pad Work (30-40 Minutes)

    • Boxing, Kickboxing, & Muay Thai Fundamentals: Kids will learn stance, footwork, and core strikes starting from boxing, to kickboxing, and finally Muay Thai:

      • Boxing: Jabs, crosses, hooks, and defensive slips/blocks.

      • Kickboxing: Front kicks, roundhouse kicks, and punch-kick combos.

      • Muay Thai: Teeps (push kicks), knees, and basic elbow strikes.

    • Practice Drills: Kids are guided by experienced coaches in practicing punches, kicks, and combinations. This can include one-on-one pad-work with a coach.

    • Skill Technique Progression: Advance from basic strikes to complex kickboxing combos (ex. punch-kick chains) and defensive work for real-world self-defence application.

  4. Games (10-15 minutes)
    • Fun Activities: Kids are rewarded for their martial arts training with fun games to keep them engaged for the rest of the class.
  5. Conditioning,  Stretching, and Cool-Down (5 Minutes)

    • Basic Calisthenics: Kids cool down with light bodyweight exercises.

    • Stretching (Occasionally): Static stretches to boost flexibility and reduce soreness.

FAQs

Kids Kickboxing / Children’s Martial Arts Questions

Kickboxing is indeed a great sport for kids, offering a myriad of benefits that extend far beyond physical fitness. It embodies the essence of one-vs-one sports, which have a unique set of advantages compared to team sports.

While team sports teach important values like teamwork, cooperation, and collective responsibility, individual sports like kickboxing focus on personal development, self-confidence, initiative, self-esteem, and assertiveness in children.

Getting your child interested in martial arts can often hinge on overcoming the initial hesitation or lack of interest that many children (and adults) experience when facing new activities. The key lies in encouraging that first step—the actual participation in a class or session.

It’s common for the idea of starting something new, like martial arts, to seem daunting or unappealing from the outside. However, once a child experiences the engaging, dynamic nature of the first class, their interest can skyrocket.

The nature of kickboxing as a one-on-one sport can play a important role in shaping psychological and emotional strengths, particularly in young girls. Although not as well-studied, surveys have highlighted a tendency towards excessive people-pleasing behaviours more commonly observed in women compared to men. This trait, while not inherently negative, can sometimes lead to challenges in asserting oneself, setting boundaries, and advocating for personal needs and rights.

Engaging in kickboxing from an early age empowers girls with combat skills and the experience of one-on-one competition, fostering a sense of personal confidence, initiative, and assertiveness. These qualities can be instrumental in developing a healthy balance of self-esteem and independence, thereby potentially mitigating the inclination towards excessive people-pleasing later in life.

Martial arts can positively influence a child’s behaviour, whether it’s depression, anxiety, or ADHD. It teaches discipline, focus, and respect, offering a constructive outlet for energy and emotions.

For children with depression, it boosts mood and develops a sense of belonging. It helps aggressive children learn to manage their emotions and react calmly. For those with ADHD, it may improve concentration and self-discipline. Overall, martial arts can lead to significant improvements in behaviour by instilling valuable life skills and self-confidence.
